http://www(.)lincolnshire.gov.uk/section.asp?docId=27637 Try the above website to get an idea of what is available. Tools like the IGI are simply that. A marriage register may state whether the parties are widowed or single and whether or not they are living in the parish. It will also name the witnesses, which may help you find out more about your family. A banns book may suggest where they marry if it isn't in the parish you expect.

Carol, If you believe that you have the pair, try marriages with names , date +- , Country, but with all counties. Possibilities are that they may have been next village or just over a border. Bob

Bob Cant find a marriage in that area for them. There are a few in the 1820's a few miles away but they had several children by then! Whats the next step do you think? Carole

Bob Yes I have done that on IGI for births. I found all the children with same parents and know for def one of them as he was my gggrandfather, didn't know about the siblings tho. I will try another search for a marriage now. Thanks for your advice. Carole

Carol, I have, I believe been in a similar circumstance for some weeks. Using the LDS is more deduction and elimination than confirmation. I recently placed my first microfiche order on the strength of my deductions. Win or lose I have given it my best shot. You say that you have dates, the fathers surname, the children’s names and mothers Christian name. You surely must have a good idea of Town or county for the marriage, so... Using the IGI search only, try this.... Put in a known child’s name and surname, the oldest preferably.... In the parents boxes put the father’s name and surname... in mothers.. just put Christian name. In type of event search put birth or baptism. For date of event put what you know for the child.... for search period put five yrs + -... put country/county..... search. Do the same search for each child named. You will hopefully by elimination, come up with a sequence of births or baptisms for the children named with parents, starting approx a year or even the same year of the marriage, same church etc. You may even be confident to move on to search for a marriage. After some practice I think you will then become acquainted and better still with this method of searching. Always cut & paste your “possibles” to a folder for reference purposes. Always treble check, never give up. I will be in and out of the board tonight, but I will be pleased to read how you have done when and whenever. Bob PS I've just seen your additional reply.... you're halfway there, be lucky.

Sarah Yes Ive found my gggrandfathers baptism in 1815. He's William Green!! Born Langtoft, Lincolnshire. Also found his siblings and his parents were John and Ann Green. Thats all I know about them. All the children were born in Langtoft, so Im presuming the parents married there. Ive looked on IGI but couldnt find a marriage in Langtoft itself but there was one or two in surrounding areas. Just wondered how I go about making sure I have the right couple without knowing her maiden name. Carole

It sounds as if you have the baptism record for your gggrandfather?? Is that where you have the names of his parents from? Did you get the info from the IGI? If you did, then you may well be able to trace any siblings for him (do you know how?). If you are lucky and his parents had their children across a 20 year spread in the same place, it becomes a lot easier to make a reasonably accurate guess as to when they might have been born/married. A lot depends on how common the name is etc etc. Do you want to post what you have, here? Someone might be able to give you more specific advice if we know ''where'' and ''who'' as well as the ''when'' that you have already mentioned! Happy Hunting Sarah

I've found out the names of my gggrandfathers parents but don't know how to go about tracing them. They must have been born around 1790. I dont know the mothers maiden name either. Would I need to see parish records to try to find a marriage, Ive looked on IGI but without knowing dates Im not sure if they are there or not. I know where their children were born but don't know if they came from the same place. Any tips please. Carole xx
