Brenda, Once again thank you.... you've also helped me with another query I posted yesterday. The refs certainly look as if they would fit. It may be the census have their births listed at the 'wrong' places. They have done that on the 1881 with William and Emma. According to the census they were born in Norwich but they weren't!!! The 1901 has them listed correctly. I'm going to apply for the certs and fingers crossed they are correct! Thank you. The family did move around alot.... William presumably was some sort of hawker as he had many occupations:- cutler grinder, scissor grinder, umbrella maker, chimney sweep to name a few!! For some reason though they settled in Stowmarket and had more children that I have confirmed with rellies or certs. They then ran a pub for a number of years so something made them finally settle!! lol Thanx again, Lisa x |

Have you found any children's births with the right names, but which you have rejected because the registration district doesn't match census info? People were sometimes born elsewhere, census info can be wrong. nell |

On the Records Office board there is a thread called ''William Hawes'' which was put up by Melanie Billingham. Part of it is looking for the same Hawes/Abbott marriage, plus a few other things!! Some of the replies might be useful to you. Good Luck! Sarah |

Hi Twinkle, Thanx for replying... details are........ William Hawes born c1857 married? Emma Adelaide Abbott born 13/3/1857 both born Ipswich, Suffolk. Guessing at marriage date as first son born 1879 according to 1881 census but can't find a birth ref for him - Arthur Hawes born Spalding, Lincs, 1879. Can't find birth ref for next child either - Henry Hawes born 1881 Cambridge. Next son also missing - Frederick Hawes born 1885 Stowmarket, Suffolk All their other children I have found birth refs for and they were settled in Stowmarket for definate. Tried to get marriage cert for one of their daughters Ethel May Hawes (my great grandma) born 21/5/1891 but they came back with the wrong bride names, birthplaces etc!! Can't find any other refs that tie in with what I know. She married Ernest Dawson and their first child was born 1912 so again a little guess work on the marriage dates. Thought I'd try one of the other sisters Victoria Elizabeth Hawes born 8/4/1887. She married John Arthur Surridge and again I can't find a marriage!! Their daughter was born 1909. I can't seem to move on....Emma's birth cert has nothing in the father column. William's birthdate seems to vary from document to document so pinning down a birth ref for him as well is proving difficult!! Was hoping to find a marriage cert that would enable me to find the next generation so to speak!! I would also liked to have looked at the Dawson line as this was my Gran's fathers family. As previously mentioned...any help!!! Thanx, Lisa |

Names, dates, locations? Why have you rejected the certs. you ordered? Registrars make errors too, and people fib. Of course, some people claim to be married but don't bother about the ceremony, and likewise aren't too hot on registering their children's births. |

Aaaaaaaaargghhhhhhhhhhh!!! It's so annoying. I can't seem to find the marriages for some of my rellies despite checking every entry on FreeBMD. I have also tried 1837online but drew a blank there too. I ordered a few certificates in the hope but they were wrong. So I wondered if anyone else had had the same problems and how they overcame them!! Not only can I not find marriage details on my Great Grand Uncle but also his children. I thought that by getting one of their certificates it might shed a nugget of light and help me find something but I've struggled with that too!! I have also struggled to find the birth details for some of their oldest children. They are all listed on the census records but appear to be missing from the BMD indexes!!! Any advice about now would be gratefully appreciated!! Thank you. Lisa |
