I know there are some recommended by GR but I wonder which books those doing their family history have found most helpful. Louise

hi Ive got Ancestral trails which i find exclent. You could also try the library and borrow a few to try out before you buy. Julie

I think the best ones are the ones produced by Local Family History Societies or Archives.

Ancestral trails is very comprehensive, a bit expensive but good value for money. Ann Glos

Louisiana Read them all! The more you read, the more you learn. Every book I have read (and I have read quite a few) teaches me something new. I recently borrowed a book from my little local library, a new one, and fell off my chair when I found a photograph of a document concerning a man who is possibly one of my ancestors. You don't have to buy any of them - all available at your library. Good luck Old Crone

Thank you all for replying. I will definitely try the local library but would like to buy a couple to keep at home which I don't have to worry about library fines on!! I will take note of your suggestions and try to read as many as possible. Louise

Hi, I've just bought Anthony Adolph's book (which is one of those advertised on the site) and have been very impressed with the amount of detail in it. It took a while to find its way to NZ bookshelves though! Sue (in NZ)
