I'd like to find out more about my grandfather and great uncle. My grandfather was in the navy and served on HMS Arkroyal in the 1940s. My great uncle was a telephonist in GPO when he was in the army. How could I obtain a copy of their records? Lucia :-) |

I sent off for a copy of my father in laws for my husband at the cost of £25 and had to wait quite a time for them. We already had his army number. Good Luck Irene |

Use this genuki page http://www.genuki(.)org.uk/big/MilitaryRecords.html (Remove ()'s and see about two thirds through the General Section) to link to the Ministry of Defence pages detailing who to contact for records depending on service type and date etc. Good Luck, it took 13 months to get my father-in-laws WW2 records! Lucia, It's worth the wait ... however, they like it to be the next of kin who applies for the records ... so you may have to get father/mother/uncle/aunt to sign the form. In my case, it was about a Gt Uncle dating from 1883 - so it wasn't a difficult decision for them to send me copies. His papers were really helpful in piecing together what happened next. You do not normally get detailed info about where they served or what they did. All that was on my documents was a place name and dates - enough for me to be able to do look ups elsewhere and 'imagine'. Good luck, Jane |
