Thanks all. I thought Ancestry was good too, although i now have to tell my husband that i used his card for the free trial and forgot to cancel it so he probably has £70 coming off his card!! Oops!

I spent a lot of money pottering about with 1901 vouchers & such. Since I joined Ancestry, I realise I could have saved all that! It's certainly not perfect, but it is very good. You just need to know what the limitations are. Watch out for when the clear filing-pockets are on offer - especially ones that are labelled as acid-free. Since I don't need legal certification of this info, I could have saved some money by going for copies of the Register pages for marriages. Since 1 July 1837, they have to have all the necessary info because they are the source documentation for the official records. Copies of the pages can be obtained (if you can track them down) for the price of a photocopy, instead of £7 for a cert, and you get to see the original handwritten signature (or X) of your ancestors instead of someone else's transcription. The local FHS (family history society) resources can be very good, although I don't get on very well with the aggregated website (they can charge for some resources which are free elsewhere online). Archive CD books has some interesting stuff, and you're supporting the preservation of the old books by buying from there. Christine

Hi I agree with everthing the previous poster has said. Ancestry is brilliant along with Family Tree Maker software. The book 'Ancestral Trails' by Mark Herber is about the best book for searching advice.

Well ancestry sub is the absolute necessity and they have 20% off at the mo. Also a good family tree program like FTM2005 which pc world has online for about £30.

I wouldn't be without Ancestry subscription and I can't wait for them to get the 1851 anbd 1841 census online. I use Family Tree Maker 2005 to keepmy tree on, and find it very easy to use and update. Buy plenty of plastic wallets, because it doesn't matter how many family tree programs you have on the computer, paper still seems to mount up everywhere. Kath. x
