Still on the trail of this guy. Havent been able to find where he was born - though it was about 1802. He married in London to Catherine Allford - got marriage details thanks guys. At his daughters baptism 1831 he is shown as a upholsterer, living at Mount Row, Kent Road, Southwark. On the 1841 he is shown aged 35 (rounded)and not of this county. At daughters marriage (Mary Ann Wyles) to my GGFx2 James Hanson (a cabinet maker) 1853 he is shown as a letter sorter!! Not sure how/why change of job. And her home address is given as New Road, Whitechapel. Cant find him there either. I have a possible death of a William Wyles 1858 Whitechapel. Now in the 1861 I can find 2 Catherine Wyles, both widows in London. One is an annuitant, so it is tempting to think that a man with a job at the then, very prestigious, post office would have a pension when he died. Does anyone know if there are any pensioner lists for the Post Office at that time please? Or any other ideas to find where this guy was born? I have a marriage of a Mary Castledine and William Wyles in Lincolnshire and Northampton and had thought these must be his parents, but this has been called into question by another member also related to the Wyles family. I need some evidence of his birthplace.

Heather 2 suggestions: 1) make a note of ALL the addresses with which you can connect this chap - where he married/daughter's baptism/both 1861 widows etc. Then plot them on a map and draw a circle round the outermost point. My guess is he would be born somewhere within that circle. Does the birthplace of either widow on 1861 help to eliminate one of them? 2) The Post office have their own archives. This is the webaddress for their family history search section: http://www.postalheritage.org.uk/whatson/familyhistoryintros nell

Many thanks Nell and Victor. Trouble is Nell, his 1841 census says not of this county. The name ties him in with the couple who married in Northampton called William Wyles and Mary Castledine but I need to find his birthplace somewhere to prove the connection. The baptism in Lincoln 1802 looked a good shot, but again, Im not a 'tag it on if it fits' sort of guy. His first child is called Mary Ann. I will have a go at looking for the pensions stuff, though I guess its a long shot. Many thanks for your assistance.

That just crossed my mind Nell, I nipped off to look at the stuff I have on him - I abandoned him a couple of months ago and memory gets hazy at my time of life. It was in Southwark - which would have been Surrey then. Now I have also looked at both Catherine Wyles, widows again and blow me, both are annuitants. One Catherine is living in Lambeth (Brixton) and shown as born Lambeth (which would have been Surrey). One Catherine is living in Islington and shown as born Bloomsbury (which would have been Middx). So we probably have the Catherine who is the annuitant in Brixton as the likely wife I should think. However, can that help me find his birth place? I also found a James Wyles aged 29 in the 1861 living in East London and working as a Letter sorter, GPO. It must have been a good job, he has a servant! Possibly a son or relative?
