I assume you are looking at an 1841 census. If so, the place of birth just states if the person was born in the same county as the census or not. So `Y` means Yes and `N` mean No

i am actually looking in the 1961 census....i assumed that it meant not known as his sister was not born in the area and place where she was born was listed???? thanks xx

Heidi Hi Could it be the it is not an N, but it is ' or ditto, meaning born in the same place as the person above. Victor

Maybe you could give us the 1861 details so we can look too? Usually they would put NK for not known, so maybe Victor is right and it is actually ''Do'' for ditto or some other squiggle! Sarah

If you search the 1861 on ancestry just putting in 'N' for place of birth, you get 56,645 matches, and the first few pages have names like 'Traveller', 'not known', 'nk', etc. in the name field, so I would guess that 'N' means the same as 'NK' i.e. not known. In fact, on the 1861 there are only 8,627 matches for a birth place of 'NK' and it looks as though a lot of those specify the county but the town was not known, whereas those I saw with N had no county given. Kate.
