The William born in 1806 could be the one buried in 1825, which means that George and Martha baptised their children shortly after birth. Twenty years is a perfectly reasonable 'breeding era' for women, as they were usually married by their early twenties. It is possible that all of them are siblings. The 1811 William may well be the son of the George Lee baptised in 1789. Given naming patterns and the minuteness of the village, it could be that George Lee jnr married a Martha as well. Or - it could be that the first George and Martha took in as their own the illegitimate son of one of their daughters. They wouldn't have been the first even though it would be stretching the bounds of credibility, biology-wise. |

Adwick on Dearne was a tiny parish. Only about 3 dozen houses. The burial PRs have been transcribed by Doncaster FHS and they should be on the FamilyHistoryOnline pay per view site. The expected James and Elizabeth burials are in the register. Elizabeth (the first) was the daughter of George and Martha when she died. Mothers' names in registers didn't become legally compulsory until the printed forms were introduced in 1813. In that part of Yorkshire, most of the registers were still giving fathers only around 1770, and some of them e.g Worsborough and Mexborough never seem to have shown both parents before 1813. Most of them started to give mothers' names at some point in the half-century before 1813, so the pattern here is fairly common. Having said that, a puzzle. There's a burial for a William in 1825 aged 19. So where does that 1811 baptism in IGI come in? Is he a grandson? Did Geo Jnr marry another Martha just to cause confusion? |

As Nell says, you cant count on it as there could be more than one George and Martha in the parish (all my James seemed to marry Sarahs and then remarry Sarahs when the first one popped off). Dont think theres any date when mothers names were added - it may be just a change of village priest. |

Martin It's very hard to read your message as GR crunch up the first posting in a thread - no idea why. To get your paragraphs in, you have to put a message saying 'see below' or somesuch, and then reply to your own thread with the info. As to your query - parish records vary a lot. All the ones I've seen on the IGI and in parish registers give both parents (unless the child is illegitimate, when often it just gives the mother), but they don't always give the mother's maiden name. Sometimes if there is more than one father in the parish with the same name, they give the father's occupation so you can tell which dad is which. Of course wives sometimes died - often in childbirth/pregnancy-childbirth related illnesses - and the father married another woman with the same christian name. To sort out your tangle you will need to check marriages between the parents to see how many couples there were. nell |
