I agree entirely.........it doesnt make sense. The consensus seems to be that this is simply a case of reregistration due to birth out of wedlock. What threw me was the ammendmends are not that common, and thought they signified something unusual. I can only go on the info given by the family, with regards the mothers name, and suspect that there are a few half truths and red herrings that are causing the trouble. I started on the basis of the mothers name,as married and it was the only birth that seemed to relate to the parents name. backto the drawing board i guess

Pamela Maybe I am not following this correctly, but. If you say she was adopted April 1928 and was 2years and 3 moths old, the birth you have for Feb 14th 1927 cannot be the correct birth, it must be Jan 1926 birth. If the information on the adoption papers is correct I would suggest you have the wrong certificates. Victor

This is what baffles me..........there is noone born in the first quarter of 1926 with the surname given, female that fits either the area or name of parent. I was wondering if she had simply been told gossip instead of facts. the cert wouldnt have adopted on it because this would be a birth name, never used. Her marriage in the forties was under her new name, and there were no special entries or problems at this time. She discovered her name, when 14,and her adoptive mum sent her birth cert in a sealed envelope to an employer. On discovering this, she asked questions, and the mother burnt the certificate.

I am more confused than ever. If she was supposed to be born in 1926 you should have found a registration at that time. Does either certificate have the word 'adopted' on it? If not I don't see how you can pass a 2-year old off as a baby? When did she start school - she must have been about 5 then. I don't think anyone would accept a 3 or 7 year old as a 5 yearold. Perhaps you could ring the GRO and ask them if they can advise. nell

Sorry no.......certs both say born Feb 14th 1927. Amendment,ie re registration was dated as April 1928. Im told she was born Jan 1926!! Her adoption cert says she was 2 yrs 3 months when adopted, which ties in with April 1928,ie was the reregistration a consequence of adoption? The mothers name which is not that common fits, but her birthday doesnt. Ive paid £7 twice for same image, despite different gro refs

If parents of a child born out of wed lock then marry within a year, they can then have the childs birth registration altered,to the married name,,,but the child will still be registered in the maiden name of the mother,,,,, so will be worth a check in either name. kay.

Pam Can you clear up a couple of points? Are you saying that Agnes was born in 1926 on Feb 14 but both the certs you have have been altered to say 7 April 1928? The point about the authority of the registrar general means that permission had to be granted for this re-registration. Is this info just on the 2nd cert you have? nell

Sorry-forgot to mention the birth is registerd in JFM 1927 under mothers maiden only, which was the original entry.Thesame code added under fathers name later but in same quarter,as an ammendment.

Agnes Valentine xxxx born February 14th 1927 Lambeth 1d 346 (added in at bottom of page on this sheet, like adoption) both parents names added but not married. December 1927...they both get married Agnes Elizabeth xxxx(21) and Archibald xxxx(19)-engineer-Southwark 1d 53 Birth of Agnes Valentine re-registered with parents names, same cert sent despite different code Lambeth 1d 277,same dob, added on both certs=7th April 1928 on the authority of the registrar general. Questions= (1) The amendment date ties in with known age at adoption,ie 2 years and 3 months from Jan 1926,but why no birth registered for this period, despite the name of mother being correct. Her dob doesnt correspond. (2) Why re-register birth. (3) Has the fact that adoption became legal in 1927 got any bearing on this. (4)Family believd to be Catholic.
