Additions to Stepping Stones online censuses

they're a firm who sell census CDs. Images, no name indexes. Mostly 1841/51 They've now got a few of them online, pay per view, as listed by Kate. 10 credits for £5. A credit lets you browse a piece or half-piece for a fortnight. A piece is a few hundred pages, but variable. Unused credits stay good, they don't expire. Ancestry has promised the same stuff some time soon, but they'll have a lot to do.

the bad ones have been rescanned and they're a lot better now. On the WRY 1841 as they originally sold it, some pages are just white with a few random black dots. I've just looked at the same pages on the site and you're in with a chance now, if the writing's not too awful, especially if you know what you're looking for. They're offering upgrades (not free) for people who bought the original CDs. I'm going to go for that. It'll be cheaper and faster than viewing online, and the images might be less compressed and better still as PDFs on CD

Hi Kate Can I ask what the quality of the images is like. I have the 1841 for Yorks bought from stepping stones and some of the images are very poor. I know it's the quality of images that is at fault and not the census as a friend has the same census bought from another source and she can read images on hers when I can't on mine Jeanette x

This is what it says on Stepping Stones today: The following census areas are available now for viewing online :- 1861 : Norfolk, West Riding of Yorkshire 1851 : Essex, Lancashire, London, Middlesex, Surrey 1841 : Anglesey, Brecon, Cumberland, West, North & East Ridings of Yorkshire Coming next - Lincolnshire 1841 (in a couple of weeks) www.stepping-stones d o t c o (.) uk remove brackets and spaces etc Bear in mind that they do not provide a name index. I've been waiting for Breconshire 1841 for ages so will now be busy looking through that. Kate.
