I'm not surprised you missed it. I found it in a backwards sort of way. I found my way to the result by a more convoluted route, and realised that that box was on the front page! Christine |

Fantastic - thank you, thank you!! My problem was not recognising the ''Go to Reference'' box for what it was - in fact, I had never noticed it at all, despite using PROCAT every so often....... It is far to late to start looking now, but tomorrow I should be able to make a start on those numbers, thanks to you! Then it's a case of working our which parishes are covered and which are not, out of the list given by the NA. Hopefully I should be able to make sense of it. Probably just in time for Ancestry to add a whole lot more data, making my list a waste of time lol Happy Hunting and thanks again Sarah |

Right... The site you want is: http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp You should come up with a window that says (top left): You are here: Home > Search the archives > the Catalogue Welcome to the Catalogue (formerly PROCAT) Just below the bit that says where you are in the system, there's a little window with a 'Go to reference' button below it. That's where you put the census references you're after. You seem to need a space between the RG and the 9 for 1861. If you put in: RG 9/3855 and then click on the 'go to reference' button, you'll see what I mean. good hunting! Christine PS - 'thicky' doesn't seem an appropriate word. I happened to know I could find the info if I were determined and I also had an idea of what the pages of info would look like when I found them, so I could also recognise when it looked like the right sort of place. I think there must have been a link, or something, with the original explanation I found... wherever that was ... to set me on the right track. |

Hi I've just got back from another Verdi Requiem rehearsal. It's Bushey festival this fortnight, and the Gala Concert is on Saturday-week (16th July). It promises to be really exciting, but we do have to keep up the practice! Now...hunting in the archives. You want me to remember what I did, don't you! Well, I'll have to go away and experiment, and then I'll come back and tell you. It took me a little while yesterday even to pick on the right bit of th Archives system... I'd seen somewhere about how to check which bit of a census you needed if you were looking for a particular parish. back in a while... Christine |

Christine - please tell me how to access the data on the National Archives site, like you did, to improve my list of missing 1861 census pieces......I'm too stupid - all results showed ''nil'' for me. Please tell me what to enter.......(Idiot's guide required). Thanks!! Happy Hunting - Sarah |
