It's even worse when you think that you've found 'em, but just can't prove it! Have been searching for years for my John Sugden - on the 1861 he claimed to be 21 and from Oldham, and on his marriage cert claimed his father was John Sugden, a stone mason. Now, thanks to the help of several people on this site, have found a family in Dukinfield (not far from Oldham), son John & father John, who was a stone mason - but, the trouble is this son John was several years older and was actually born in Marsden Yorks. So, did my one get his birthplace & age wrong on the census (and when he enlisted in the army), or have I got the wrong family with this Dukinfield lot? Can't find any other likely family in the Oldham area, so I think that I have the right one - but just how do I prove it, and can I discount the only written evidence that I have for him by assuming that he told porkies about his age & birthplace? I have decided that my ancestors don't like me and I should adopt the nearest family that I find that I can trace back very easily. I also think that it is always easier to do someone else's tree. Will you adopt me? Pippa |
