Yes, I don't think unmarried mothers were provided for separately - they were either supported by their families or sent off to live with other relatives. If they were destitute the workhouse would take them in. nell

Anyone know if there was one of the above in the mid 1800's? Full story - I have Alice Dipple (born B'ham/Maybe Balsal H) without a father on her marriage cert, listed in 1861 as a g'daughter living with her g'parents in Herfs.. Also in the house is her aunt Sarah (blind) and I'm thinking Alce may be the illig. daughter of Sarah.
