The bmd on ancestry is supplied by freebmd, so ancestry will be a bit behind freebmd.

But 1837 is useful for the period not covered by Freebmd, especially if you can't get to the library/record offices which have the microfiche indexes, and if you have a good idea of when and where the event happened. nell

Ancestry wins hands down! There is far more information on there than just census. Be sure to subscribe to Ancestry UK only unless you have masses of relatives inthe US. Have been using Ancestry for years. Wasted a lot of money on 1837!

Thanks for the input. I had a free trial with Ancestry a few months back but didn't subscribe. I haven't tried 1837 and wondered if it was the same info. Think I'll take out a full subscription for Ancestry. Linda x

They are both completely different. Ancestry offers census info 1861-1901 plus BMD information (not complete, they use the same database as FreeBMD). You need to subscribe to Ancestry. 1837online has the complete GRO indexes online from 1837-2002, you can but credits as and when you need them. You will probably need to use both at some point during your research. Sam x

They offer different info. 1837online gives you births, marriage and deaths from 1837 - when registration began. However it is pay to view and you need to have a reasonable idea of what year/area you are looking for. Ancestry is really a necessity if you are doing family research - you get the census from 1861-1901 all indexed by name and other useful stuff. No contest.

Which is the best value. Which has the most info? Or are they both the same?
