Brenda, I have searched and searched for where Pitchers Point could be - any idea with your local knowledge? Even my Dad doesnt know though he remembers his grandad (William Dixon) saying that his grandad (oh gawd) owned a little warehouse on/off Rotherhithe Street. |

Hi. From the census data we saw that my partners family were tanners in Cottingham, Yorkshire. We searched WADDINGTON (the family name) and the English Region, Yorkshire. It brought up hundreds of matches, but we found: Hull City Archives: MCA Waddington Ltd, tanners, Cottingham Road, Hull Clicked on the link, got the e-mail address for Hull City Archives. Got a friendly e-mail back telling us exactly what was in the archive. Sent off a cheque for a couple of quid and got photocopies of company accounts, returns etc. A bit of 'flesh on the bones' of her family history. |

Well you get lots of Sun Insurance Policies - handy if you have a family who was in business and likely to have paid for fire insurance. I have found one of mine who was a cabinet maker in Soho with an insurance policy. Also, the above instance of what I believe may be my GGFx3 getting into trouble over blocking the Thames waterway with bits of wood. There are also things like school commendations etc. The Old Bailey is a good site too to see if you have any criminals or witnesses. |

Thanks Brenda. I advise everyone to have a look at Access to Archives - a much underused resource in my opinion but a good one. I have been sent copies of records from various archives for just the price of a photocopy and return postage. |

Thanks for that Brenda. I think I have found a couple of my Dixons from Rotherhithe being charged with: Conservancy papers - ref. CLA/036/02 Court 3: Surrey (Southwark) 25 June 1790 FILE - Indictment of John and William Dixon, late of the parish of St. Mary, Rotherhithe, mast makers, for allowing timber to impede the navigation at Pitcher's Point. - ref. CLA/036/02/1790/3/2 - date: 1790 This may be the John I have been searching for, father to my William. Will check it out. |
