British Empire Medal The British Empire Medal (Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service) is a British medal awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the crown. While recipients are not technically members of the Order of the British Empire this honour is nevertheless affiliated with the OBE.

You should be able to find out if you look on the London Gazette site: http://www.gazettes-online.*co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?WebType=0 (remove *) Christine

If they were in the Forces it may be possible to find the information you want through their service records. It may interest you to know that this medal has now been discontinued, another instance of our Government tinkering with the Honours system. Jennifer

Angie - the search system on the Gazette is pretty specific. Did you try his name both ways round? (i.e. surname-first and surname-last?) - and did he have any middle-names to confuse the system? What was the name? and when was the medal awarded? (I'm curious now!). Actually - I'd be interested to know that info for Big Bird's aunt, too. (same curiosity, again). Christine
