My mother has been trying to track down information on her father (John English ROBSON) still with no luck. We know that her mother took him to court for maintanence payments in the early 1950's and I was wondering if anyone knows about the ability to access English court records to try and find an address etc. This man and his father (who has the same surname) are proving to be so damn elusive... all we have is my mother's parents marriage certificate to prove he existed. Thanks in advance, Liz |

Try contacting the records office for the area concerned. I am not sure, but there may be a closure period on some records, but it is always worth asking. |

Thanks, my mum has mislaid the actual details at the moment but they'll turn up. The only problem I can envisage is that the court house moved... fortunately we live in the same town still so unlike the rest of the info we've been trying to get, finding this out should be relatively easy. We just really weren't sure if it was worth trying, thanks. Liz. |

My grandmother took my grandfather to court for maintenence payments in the 1920's. I got the details just this year. The case will have been heard at the Magistrate Court for the area she lived in. You can view magistrate court records as long as they are more than 30 years ago. We found that my grandfather had to pay 7 shillings court costs immediately, and then 15 shillings a week after that. We also got the exact date he deserted my grandmother, and the name of the policeman who had to issue him with the court order. I had to go through the original court register to find the details, but as I had a rough idea of the year, it didn't take too long. The register made for very interesting reading, and a lot of people seemed to come before the courts for trivial things, time and time again (probably just like today), although the penalties seemed much harsher - perhaps something they should try today!! I found the information at the local Archives department, not at the court. However it did not give an address for my grandfather, which I was hoping for, although it did give the address for my grandmother, which I already knew - sod's law really!! Kath. x |
