An after thought - one can obtain a copy of a US citizens handwritten application for their Social Security Number from the Social Security Administration if they have the persons Social Security Number. (All US citizens, after I think 1936, had to apply for a number if they wanted to work - it is now mandatory for all, at time of birth, to have a SS number.)Information the person filled out would include parents names, place of birth, etc.... The information can only be obtained if the person has passed away and you can look up their Social Security Number online at the Social Security Death Index: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/ Remember to remove the ( ) from the address. Don't use the first field on the top of this page - it's just an advertisement for Ancestry - Use the fields under the subheading: SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX (SSDI). When you locate the person you are looking for you will see a link for SS-5 Letter - click on it and it will provide a letter for you to submit your request. You'll also see a neat little feature, a link, called ADD POST EM. Click on this and you can leave a history on this person and/or leave your contact information - Anyone coming across this name in the future would then see that you too have a link to this person and they can contact you direct. For my Dad's I added his history, my contact info and a link to our family's website - www(.)coskey(.)net . Hope that helps! Judy Another after thought - I'm full of them (LOL!) I've been successful finding other family members on the SSDI list that I was unaware of by just filling in a last name and hitting search.....especially helpful and easy when a surname was unusual.....knowing a state in which to look also narrows it down a bit.

I can't answer your question as far as getting a death certificate in the States from the UK but if you do order certs from here make sure you request 'the long form' to include parents. Apparently there are two types, long and short, the short form does not include parent's information - I found this out when I ordered my grandmother's death certificate and had to reorder the long version of the cert. Just a quick question. Has anyone from UK ordered death certificates from America? If so, is it fairly straightforward? Many thanks, Kate
