I have just received a birth cert. for my husbands g.g.grandfather b.1844 and the address given is Commercial Buildings, Stoke upon Trent. Can anyone give me some info regarding this address ? His fathers occupation was given as Potter. Having a terrible time trying to decipher his mother's maiden name, but that is another story !! JudyNZ |

Hi Judy I live in Stoke on Trent and have never heard of these buildings. Do you know where about they were living? There are six towns comprising Stoke on Trent so if you could narrow it down to a particular one it could help. Do you have them on 1851 census and if so, where were they living? I have 1851 Staffs census so if you want me to look them up, let me know. As I said, I have never heard of Commercial Buildings but if no-one else can help I could always ask my dad who has pretty good local knowledge! Sam x |

Thank you both Sam & jackie for your replies. I have them on the 1861 census, address ,Penkhull Rd and then his mother and brother on the 1881 census at 16 Penkhull New Rd. My curiosity was aroused by the address given as a building i.e. as his father was a potter did this mean a type of communal living for pottery workers ? The name of our ancestor is Eli MORLEY and I have managed to keep track of him on the '81 and '91 census.I think he died in 1899,my brickwall now is as I mentioned, trying to decipher his mothers maiden name on his birth cert. Once again many thanks, JudyNZ |

Commercial Buildings was probably a terrace of houses called that name because it was near a commercial district. You could try e-mailing the local library/local history centre to see if they have any info. nell |

Thank you for your replies Nell,I will follow up your advice,at least, thanks to you all I am building up a picture of where they lived. jackie,my Eli's mothers name was Eliza formerly N***en so as you can imagine I am trying all sorts of variations. Particularly as the N could be a W or an H. Ho Hum such is the fun of genealogy but at least I'm learning more and more of English geography. Regards, JudyNZ |
