How can i find out why relative was in prison?

ive justchecked the 1881 census and found that a relative was in prision at the time. It was at the HMP prison in Ipswich. Is there any was i can find out why they were imprisioned. |

You need to check the 1871 and 1891 censuses to see if he was in prison then, to narrow down the time scale. You can then try to locate the prison register (generally in the county records office) which will give his date of admission/dismissal, as well as a description and details of his crime and trial. Once you have an idea when/where the trial was held, you can look in the relevant local newspaper (local archives/libraries have these on microfilm) or if its a serious crime, it might make the nationals too. nell |
