cannot find the birth of grandmother

my grandmother was called gertrude smart and i know she was born in 1912 in brighton sussex but i can find no trace of her apart from her marriage and death i have looked on free bmd and ancestry.co but no luck anyone have any ideas where to look now ? debbie |
