On birth cert surname spelt Ruff so after weeks of searching for marriage found that the surname was spelt Rulf.(1846) From 1861 to 1901 census name now Ruff. but another family from same area keeps the surname Rulf. Can anyone enlighten me? |

It is a common thing for surnames to changed,a few reason are some people were not able to read or write so spelling mistakes happend. Also some surnames had letters droped,I have a family of Peart's that kept the original spelling but another member of that line dropped the R and went with Peat. Angie x |

Spelling only started to stay consistant in the 1900's when more people went to school regularly, and more people learned to read and write. Before then it just depended on who was writing the name down and what they thought they heard. If the person giving the information couldn't read, then they couldn't check the spelling, so changes happened quite a lot. Kath. x |

You can also get a complete name change through marriage e.g. of a widow. My Sherwood line comes from John Sherwood born about 1777 who married the widow Mary Giles in 1825. They probably had three children before marriage (including my ancestor in 1824) and three after. My ancestor always used Sherwood, although he was baptised Francis Giles. Some of his children used Sherwood, some Giles (legally correct) and could appear on a census as Sherwood but marry the year after as Giles! |
