Well I don't know what they called her - it was too long ago lol I can see this thread changing tack (which is fine!) My personal favourite, which got me very confused early on, is Dougal for a girl!! Used over and over in one parish I worked on, though not in my tree, thank goodness. Can't remember whereabouts it was now, but probably Kempston, Bedfordshire.... Sarah |

Sarah According to this site Alce is a variant of Alice, once popular but then fell into disuse: http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~oel/givennames.html#A replace * with . nell |

I've always ASSUMED it was, along with my personal favourite, Ales. Some of the names seem to pass through the mangle before they get written down. Eg Denis, Deunes, Dionysia. What did the family actually call her? |

Hi All, Does anyone know whether the first name ''ALCE'' (female), that I keep coming across in 17C parish records, is a derivative of ALICE or a name in it's own right?? Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated! Happy Hunting - Sarah |
