I need some advise again, and there is no place like this place. When does a surname change, my head is about to explode! the name is Millership and im not sure that Millichop/Millerchip how do you know if they are related or not. Your advice is always very much appreciated. Yvonne |

I think name changes came about when very few people could write and they were put down as they heard them, complete with accent. As more people became able to read and write then names seem to have settled down. Don't take this as written in stone but I think it makes sense. Gloria |

Names can be changed all the time. My husband and I are often recorded as Evens instead of Evans. When I was unmarried my surname Gray appeared as Grey. If you are saying you have found some Millerchip/chopss who might be related to Millerships, I'd say you would need to use info from the census and or/certificates to prove a link. nell |

Yvonne There usually isn't another way, in my experience! For what its worth, I have a gt gt grandmother who was baptised under surname Melin, married as Maling is Malling on her son's birth cert and ended up as Mealing. Her family are all Mealing on various censuses until 1881 when one of them became Mellin and the others all disappeared! nell |
