K I had a great-grandmother who is also 'illegitimate daughter of' and then her mother's name. I didn't think it was cruel - at least I knew that her father's name hadn't been missed off by mistake. It could have said b*st*ard, which would be worse. I think my gt-grandmother was proud of her mother's family -she used her maiden name (also her mothers of course) as the middle name for her 3rd son, which is how I managed to find her). She was very devout and called another son after the vicar of her childhood parish, who had married her. Most of her children had Biblical names and she used to correct the vicar if he misquoted the Bible. nell |

Lynne - Thanks for swift reply. You are of course right. As I said, a daft question by an even dafter poster. Rita |

Rita You can't use the mother's name for a ref check on a marriage as it is not shown on the cert (in England). Lynne |

Hi - I am just about to send of for 3 marriage certs on a possible, as to opposed to probable, basis. I am ordering online and the only ref. check would the mother of the bride. She was an Elizabeth Richards mother of Jane Richards (and at least 2 other children). Father of the bride is unknown at this point. She married my g.grandfather in 1878 and so became legitimately Mrs. Collins when Jane was 16. Elizabeth gave her status on marriage as spinster which implies that she never married but (shrug of shoulders) who knows. I tend to the Mrs. Collins option if that is the only ref. check I can give or if possible to give Mrs. Richards as a back-up. An either or or scenario. Opinions, please. Thanks Rita |
