is there anyway I can find out if my nan had a child before marriage, my aunt once told my mum her sister that their mum had had a child before she got married. my grandparents didnt marry until they were 27/28 when he was home on leave from the war in 1916.

You need to look for a child born in the right area to a person of the right name on 1837, A bit of guesswork i guess. Did she keep the child? jess

Where have you looked so far? It would be under the mother's maiden name. FreeBMD has trancribed quite a lot, now, of the records up to about 1910. If you know where, then there may be a local BMD site - they're incomplete, too, but sometimes have different gaps. If it wouldn't cause distress to anyone living, you might post the info you have for others to see if they can help. Christine
