Ive found my gggrandfather and now trying to find his parents. My ggggrandfathers name is William Martin born in 1831 in Tilsey, Surrey. I know i can find out from a birth certificate, but i understand certificates were not about until 1837. William married Mary Ann Mills in November 1852. I dont know what to do, can anyone help me please Natalie

You could put a request on the records board for the 1851 census as he did not marry until 1852 and hope he was with his parent. Or even the 1841 would find him at home.

Natalie Just had a look at the info Judy has given. This is only information one of the membere of the LDS has placed on the site and is not information from a church record. I checked on 1837 and yes there was a Mary Ann Mills that married Dec 1852 in Lichfield Vol 6B page 498, but there is no William Martin to match up with either the place, Vol or page, so I think this information cannot be relied upon. Get his marriage certificate if you don't already have it, because it will give you his father's name and father's occupation so you can be sure if you find the right family on censuses and in baptism records etc. Kate.

Yes, thats what I was about to say Kate. Get the marriage certificate, you will get his dad and occupation, her dad and occupation, the address they were living at, both the groom and brides occupations and the witnesses names. Well worth the £7 I would have thought.
