I keep a list of GRO index references. Also everyone on my tree is referred to by his or her birth name. The problem arises when a married woman dies. I have her listed as her maiden name, but her death certificate and index is in her married name. So, on my list of index references I have written 'GRO Death Elizabeth Smith Mar 1899 District vol page' However Elizabeth Smith is in my database as Elizabeth Jones and Smith is her married name. I have been trying the idea of writing it as 'GRO Death Elizabeth Smith(Jones) Mar 1899 District vol page' In your opinion, which name should come first and which should go in the brackets.

I'd go with the way you've said if it's a death. Use her married name and put maiden name in brackets. I would put (nee Jones) in brackets, then everyone knows that is her maiden name. You are also far too organised for me - I envy you!!! Kath. x

Thank you for your thoughts. Using the word nee makes sense as that it the normal form for a maiden name, so would be understood by anyone reading it. Organised? You must be joking. You havent seen the boxes of paper I have.
