I have a birth certificate for Phyllis Eliza Nichols b Barking Essex 31 March 1850 Parents Richard Nichol (Fisherman) and Sarah Elizabeth Nichol (formerly Roberts). GRO reference is Romford Jun 1850 XII 930 Middle name on the cert looks more like Elvia I have arrival in Auckland, New Zealand on ship “Romulus” (departed Gravesend 26 June 1862 arr Aucklan 18 Oct 1862) of Richard Nichol (Butcher), Sarah Nicholl (Mrs) Phyllis, Ann, Caroline, Martha and Richard (all presumably children.) Phyllis Eliza Nicholl married 31 12 1869 in Thames NZ to Joseph Cornwell Williams. Phyllis Eliza Williams died 29 5 1896 aged 44(b Essex England) in Thames NZ. Parents stated as Richard Nicol (Ship rigger) and Sarah Nicol. Had been in NZ 34 years. I am certain that this is the same Phyllis Eliza throughout. So far I cannot find any of them on 1861, can’t find a marriage for Richard & Sarah Elizabeth and can’t find births for the other children. Where do I go next – HELP!!!! Peter |

Sorry, I'm confused. Phyllis Eliza Williams died aged 34 and was born in England, does that mean she was born there AFTER the family had arrived in Auckland? IS she the same person throughout? |

Have you found what happened to the parents or other children once they got to NZ? Maybe you need to find some more death records and hope some of them were not lying about their ages lol Have you trawled 1837online for births/marriage? The free site don't have very good coverage for the years you are after. Will carry on looking now for a while (1861 inspiration required! Don't forget, up to one million people may be missing from the 1861 - mildew and mice, I understand) Sarah |

Gwyneth Sorry for confusion - have amended message. She died in NZ aged 44 (Not 34 as I typed). She had been in NZ 34 years - NZ death certs are a bit different. Sorry Peter |
