Could anyone please tell me what the GSU number on the bottom of an 1891 Ancestry census personal image means. Source information: RG12/881 Registration district: Alverstoke Sub registration district: Alverstoke ED, institution, or vessel: New Barracks Folio: 89 Page: 21 (click to see others on page) GSU Number: 6095991 The male in question is 18 years old and down as a soldier in barracks. many thanks in advance to anyone who may point be able to help, Joan |

It's nothing to do with being in the army (or indeed with *him*) - I've looked at relatives in Cumberland and Lincs and they too have a number 609xxxx. |

Many thanks Geoff, its the first time i've seen this, (or am i just unobservant) and i'd hoped it may be a line to follow as the details are for a cousin of mine's grandfather (with a common surname). He's just starting his tree and looking for leads to his pateral grandfathers family. Joan |

Thanks for the replies. Looks like my cousin will just have to trawl through countless Smith b.d.m's and such to try and find his ancestor, not even knowing the area the family was originally from. His grandfather was born in Gibralter as his great grandfather was stationed there. Thats all the detail he has so far. Thanks again. Joan |
