Hi My grandad apparently 'took part' in the fighting of WWI & II (i think in one he was the night warden who would check the blackout and stuff). Is there anywhere that lists the people who signed up to help with the war, either as a soldier or otherwise. Thanks |

Have you tried searching the name on the national archives catalogue? Have found lots of info on there re military stuff for my lot. WO (NA reference) stands for war office records. There are also medal cards online for ww1 now on the NA site also. Sarah |

Hi Robyne By what you say about yout Grandad it sounds as if he was an A.R.P. warden during World war 2. They wore an armband and sometimes a helmet and performed duties like fire watching(caused by incendiary bombs) and also looked to see that people didn't show any lights through the windows etc. Try History in focus-civ.defence in london ww11 this info about ARP's was pretty standard in most cities and towns, my Dad was one and they were in a little hut at the bottom of the next street where we lived in Stoke on Trent (Tunstall) |
