Is there anywhere I can look to find out where a marriage actually took place plz? I know the parish but not sure if it was a register office or church. Thanks, Ann

Is this after 1837? That's when reg offices were set up. before that, C of E, Quaker or Jewish ceremonies were the only way to marry (unless you go a lot further back). After 1837 the same, plus other churches and chapels were granted rites to marry, but in many cases a registrar had to be present to legalise the ceremony. I went to a wedding like this at a chapel in Bournemouth in about 1985. The registrar was hidden behind a screen. Reminded me of that bit in The Wizard of Oz, where Toto pulls back the curtain and there's the wizard!! Not sure you would be able to find out where your wedding took place without forking out for the cert! Sarah

LOL I like the wizard of oz theme, it made me chuckle...I suppose the mother in law would be the wicked witch of the west! Thanks for the info Sarah. Yes the wedding was in the 50's. Ann

I suppose you could find the places where a marriage could have taken place, but the only way to find out which was the one used would be to get the cert. Pity our future researchers who in addition to churches, synagogues, register offices and mosques now have various marriage rooms and places licenced for weddings to choose from! have you got a date? Is it a very small parish? It might be on the IGI. Why do you think it might be a register office do? nell

Not only all those ''marriage rooms'' and other venues in this country these days for our descendants to trace (as Little nell said), but what about all those beach weddings in the Caribbean??? Sarah

Thanks, sorry all for late reply but I was offline. The bride was pregnant at the time of marriage hence my thought of register office! I hadn't thought about future researchers...........it will be a nightmare for them! Thanks for the help Toto for now, LOL Ann x
