Give them a ring to see if you need to make an appointment. Some record offices are so busy there are not enough fiche readers for all-comers. I haven't been to that one but most offices are similar. You will probably need some form of ID with you. Work out what you want to find - it will take a long time at first so don't try to do too much at once. Remember to make a note of what you have searched even if there is no result - then you don't go back over it all in a few months/years time! You are only allowed to write in pencil in the search room and also only allowed to take a few sheets of paper/small notebook in with you. There are usually lockers to leave your other stuff in. Most of all -enjoy it! The staff are helpful and will show you where stuff is and how to use the machines. Good luck Anne

Paula Virtually all records offices have their own websites which will tell you what their main holdings are. Most useful would be parish registers, poll books/electoral rolls, street directories and maps. Write a list of what you want to find out and prioritise it - sometimes searches take longer/shorter than you think. For example, I went to Richmond Local studies centre and found electoral rolls bound on a shelf and it was easy to go through them year by year. At the London Metropolitan Archives I had to pre-order them 5 at a time and collect them one at a time and go through them very carefully as they were in a fragile state. It took me nearly all day to check through about 7 years! Plenty of pencils and paper. Perhaps a digital camera? Bottle of water and sandwiches for breaks. You might need £1 for a locker and loose change for photocopies. nell
