If you can't find a marriage cert on 1837online, it might be that the local cert copy got lost between the local office and the GRO. You could try asking the local register offices to where they lived have any record of a marriage. nell

Could this be Catherine and daughter Mary Ann on the 1881? Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability Catherine HODGITT Head M Female 23 Aspull, Lancashire, England Frame Minder In Cotton Mill Mary A. HODGITT Daur Female 18 m Atherton, Lancashire, England Source Information: Dwelling Off Plank Lane Late Gores Houses Census Place Abram, Lancashire, England Family History Library Film 1341902 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 3771 / 63 Page Number 31 If they are the right ones then perhaps you could obtain Mary Ann's birth record to see what Catherine's maiden name is. Name: Hodgett, Mary Ann Record Type: Births Quarter: September Year: 1879 District: Leigh County: Lancashire Volume: 8c Page: 262 Rose

You could try looking for the marriage of a Mr Hodgetts to a Catherine pre 1891, probably a year or two before the birth date of her eldest child, that may indicate that she is a widow. If that works out then look for the death of Mr Hodgetts between that date and 1891. If those both work out then the Hodgetts/Catherine marriage certrificate will give her maiden name.

Question: In 1891 is John either Married or widowed? If so consider that Catherine was brought in to the house offically as a house keep (mostlikly married or widowed herself) and late they were co-habiting. If there is a child younger than Henrietta and it is likly to be John's, he may have 'adopted' Henrietta and her brothers and sisters. This would give her his name. (By adopted, I mean looked after them as his own children. Have you looked for John and Catherine in 1881 and any children that might have been around at that time
