Margaret Report 21 Jun 2005 14:16

I've lost track of my Gt.Grandfather. James Saywell, born in Croxton, Cambs., 1856. Between 1881 and 1883 he moved to Finchley, London. I have him on each Census upto and including 1901. The marriage certificate of his son, in 1907, does NOT show him as deceased. In 1910 one of his sons and possibly some other relatives had moved to S.Wales. I can find no record of his death. Did he stay in London, return to Cambridgeshire or move to S.Wales? I'm stuck! Any help or advice would be gratefully accepted. M. Steer

Hi Margaret, it is very hard to trace people after 1900. If you know where they are then electrol records seem to be the way. Or spend loads of money on 1837, not forgetting to save the images as I did!!

Montmorency Report 21 Jun 2005 14:36

from 1910-1920 inclusive, only 4 James Saywell deaths in the FamilyRelatives index (bearing in mind this is a transcription). Only one of them is remotely close on the age: Deaths 1914 Apr-Jun Saywell, James Fareham 2b 691 age 58

Dear Jeanie and Robin, Thanks for your replies. Jeanie, yes I could trawl through 1837 Online and forget to save the images, as I've done on previous occasions, trouble is I don't have a clue as to where or when he died. Robin, thankyou for the info., on the death in Fareham. I can't imagine why he should have been in that part of the country - but with my relatives, anything is possible. Thankyou both, M. Steer.

Margaret, If you have a family records office near you, you could look through the deaths in the St Catherines Index for free. You're library will know where the nearest one is. 1837 is very convenient but very expensive if you don't have a clue when the death occured. best wishes, Carol

There is one consideration. If the registrar didn't know and didn't ask, they may not have said he was deceased - so it wouldn't have been recorded. Christine
