Hi Karen The first term could be cerebral Apoplexy ( a stroke ) or Cerebral Anoxia ( lack of oxygen to brain ) Empyema , is a collection of pus in the lung, which can cause spontaneous pneumothorax - a collapsed lung. it is NOT emphysema, which is a chronic lung condition causing the air sacs in the lung to break down forming cavities. Dear Karen Cerebal ataxia is probably a stroke though it could also be a seizure. Emphesema is a chronic lung disease often suffered by miners which causes a build up of fluid and progressive shortness of breath. I agree that a pneumo thorax literally air in the chest is a collapsed or punctured lung. Spontaneous means that it hapenend naturally not as a result of injury. I suspect that your relative was either a heavy smoker or worked in a coal mine or similar. I hope that helps best wishes Annie RN

I know a spontanious pneumo-thorax, is a collapsed lung, as my husband has had one. The words look similar Sandra

Hi I have today got a death certificate and it and have looked on a few different sites mentioned on the message boards and goggled and not come up with much can any one help me with what these mean. 1a) Cerebral (Alseex) 1b) Empyema of chest (have found that) 1c) spelling?? Spontomloxs Habsno Psumo Thorax Not sure what the spelling should but that’s the best I can with the handwriting. I know that Thorax is to do with the chest but what the words before mean of don’t know I have looked up Cerebral which comes up with of the brain but that’s all I got wondered if anyone here could help with what the terms mean Thanks Karen
