I have a great uncle who was born in 1917 - when he was about 7 his father died and he was put into an orphange for about a year... he was so upset by this that he was actually sent home. He had older siblings and his mother was still alive but at the time I think it was more a case of money and looking after a child with no father around ( hope that makes sense ! )............My problem is finding out about the orphanage. All I've been told is that he was ' sent to the Post Office Orphanage in Ingatestone'.......his Father and Grandfather both worked for the Post Office.....Does anyone know of this orphanage ? .... Hi Alan. This information came first hand from my great uncles daughter - her father was put into the 'orphanage' when he was about 7. His father Worked for the postal service in London ( he was born 1879 Islington and is on 1901 census as a postman ) His father also worked for the London Postal service. He was born 1846 Islington and on '81 / '91 / '01 census and various marrage cert for his children works for the postal service until retirement ) But it's just this mention of time in an orphanage that puzzles me........ I can't seem to find any possibilities !! Any idea ? Esta

I worked for The Post Office for 32 Years, They did have a Widows and Orphans Pension Scheme, is is likely that Post Office orphans were not abandoned by them as the staff welfare was paramount. It is likely there was an orphanage contact the Postal Museum at Phoenix Place ,see my other entry. I have researched all my Post Office relatives there, I am sure they will be able to help you. They hold National Pension / Service Records Maurice
