Thanks Jess, my Grandfather brother was hoping that as it went before a court, that he may be able to access these documents. We know very little about his father (my great grandfather0 and he was hoping he could get more detailed information. He did spend some time in care, before being taken back by his mother and then being adopted by her second husband.

Question 1) maybe - if he was around then yes, he consent would have been asked. if he wasn't (and wasn't traceble) then No, he probably didn't. When my older sibling was given for adoption both consented as he was 'on the scene'. By the time i came along he had done a flit, so no he didn't consent on mine. Question 2) The paperwork surrounding adoption is only accesible to the adoptee - not to friends or family - and the rules on that are pretty inflexible. I doubt as he was what I term a 'part adoption' - IE by a father only- that there is anymore paperwork to be had anyway. hope this is of some help Jess

Siobhan I have googled but been unable to find the answers. Perhaps your local library has a book on adoption law. Since this happened in the 1930s, I imagine the original 1926 adoption law would be in force. nell

My Grandfathers uncle was adopted in 1938 by his mother's second husband when she remarried. We know very little about his real father (my great grandfather). He has recently received his adoption certificate and I have also sent him a copy of his original birth certificate which I had ordered a while back. My question is the following. If his real father was still alive at the time of his adoption. Would his father have had to give his permission for him to be adopted by the said second husband. My second question is would we be able to get hold of any legal documents of the adoption besides the actual adoption certificate which we already have. I believe the adoption did go before the courts. Hope the above make sense. I really need some advice. Thanks
