I have an ancestor who seems to have vanished in 1811, 1807 - Walter Little married Ann Maughan in Alston,CUL, 1811 - son Thomas born, baptism stated that his father was in the Militia and was not of Alston, I know for a fact that his dad was born in Alston and married there so I presume that he had been living elsewhere for a few years and that was why they stated that he was 'not of Alston' After that they vanish, don't appear in any census and no sign in the parish registers after 1811, I searched on National Archivist site in case Walter fought in one of the early wars but no listing yet. I can't be sure what Militia he belonged to, Helpppp George |

This is the National Archives research leaflet on the militia: www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=26 it seems there are various surviving records in Kew. Militias were organised on a county-wide basis. Any chance his wife died after 1837 - you could see if her death cert describes her as wife or widow of Walter Little - then you'd know whether or not he was dead by then. nell |
