the register would just say John, son of John Shelley and Catharine Brown. Then the transcriber has to decide what to put in the 'child's surname' box in the database. Some parsons always recorded the mother's maiden name in this way. This one evidently didn't, looking at other entries in the same year, so he was indicating that the parents weren't married. Presumably you know what name John used in later life. The transcriber has no way of knowing that, from his/her point of view, on the info in the baptism register, John could have grown up with either name.

hi, as it shows the parent as as being john shelley and catharine brown, maybe they were not married at the time of christening?

Hi I had a look for a birth on the LDS site think I found it but it said John Shelley or Brown? why has it got 2 names Born in 1797 Berkshire anyone have any ideas thank you Margaret
