Hi Lynne Thanks for that. I know you cant find Charlie on the 1901 census, Have you found him on the 1881 census, because there are a few Charles Sweeneys on there. Babs

Hi Lynne You say your ancestor came from Salford, well, that is right next to the Manchester Ship Canal where they still have Ships loading and unloading to this day. My husband said the a slinger or rigger works in conjunction with a crane or a hoist working with cables on the bankside. This could be dock work or mine working where you also get slingers in mines and there were a lot of coal mines in the neighbouring towns of Salford in 1905. Best wishes Babs

Thanks for your replies. I'm looking for Charles Sweeney, probably in Salford, Lancs. On his daughter's marriage cert in 1905 he is a Slinger. I can't find a Charles Sweeney with that occupation on 1901 census. Any more help would be appreciated. Thanks. Lynne

Hi Lynne I have read that in 1905 in the Logging Industry there was a RIGGING SLINGER. This was the person who attached the wire ropes to the logs. Hope this is of some help. There may well be slingers in other occupations but this is the only one I could find, Best wishes Babs

Slinger - Person who used slings for loading goods on ships, wagons etc.
