There have been several threads about this name. It seems that there can be no definite answer, - each case is different. My aunt Minnie was named after her mother. For each of them it was their full given name.

I have a frind whose great-gran was called Minnie, and her name was Millicent.... why she wasn't called Millie is beyond me! Also found this online: Wilhelmena – Wilmett, Wilmot, Mina, Minnie, Minella Mary, Miriam – May, Moll, Molly, Mamie, Pol, Polly, (sometimes) Minnie

Can be a name in its own right, or can be short for Mary or Wilhelmina. There is a Minna in my tree who was Minnie for short. Kate.
