Hi. Can anyone help. Have been trying to find (for months now!) record of my gt grandfather Joseph Hills birth. According to all cencus he was born in Epping Essex in 1838, and i know his father was Thomas Hills. I can only find one in Bethnal Green, Stepney, St Ives, or Southhamton. I thought i'd cracked it when i found a male Hills born in 1837 in the right place with the right father's name, but it states that the mothers name is Louisa and his fathers occupation as butcher. According to details in 1841 cencus which was very kindly found for me, his mothers name is Lucy (maybe short for Louisa?) and his fathers occupation was a farmer. Do you think i have the correct cert, or is it one of the others? It is so frustrating! I'd be very grateful for any advise. Sue |

Susan I have a Louisa who becomes a Lucy. I would suggest you get a look at the parish baptism register. nell |

Don't forget that the 'mother' on the 1841 census could be his step-mother. Though I won't point out that as relationship to head of household isn't given on the 1841 you can't even be sure that the head of household was his father! Kate. |

Oh, and also when you say the censuses state he was born in 1838, I guess you mean his age is 3 in 1841, 13 in 1851, etc.? That would mean he was born between 1837 and 1838, and I hate to say he could have been born in the earlier part of 1837 before Civil Registration started, in which case his birth/baptism would only be found in parish records, presumably for Epping. I have often cursed my g-g-grandfather for being born early in 1837!! Kate. |
