Oh wow so much information - another jacket potatoe for dinner tonite!!! It looks like maybe both of the John's died then, yes it is such a shame the ages are not recorded!! I did have a Hannah down as one of the children from IGI but as their parents name's were just recorded on there as John and Ann I had it on the backburner. I have a marriage of a John and Ann Dunwell in 1805 in Leeds, but am not sure if it is the right John and Ann - reason being that the John and Ann I am looking for had Joseph Button (my GGx3 who i have on every census from 1861-1901 in London area) was not born until 1828, am not sure about the big age gap - 1805 marriage, and then loads of kids up til 1828!! Re the moving - I also have trade directories for them in various streets in Leeds, York Street, St James Street! Thank you so much everyone for their searching and replies! Is this family history addictive or not!! Many thanks!!! Linda |

I followed up Robin's lead on Yorks BMD - re the deaths - and found: Yorkshire Death indexes for the years: 1864 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference BUTTON John Leeds West Leeds WEST/52/179 BUTTON John Leeds West Leeds WEST/54/334 there's also this one... Yorkshire Death indexes for the years: 1862 GRANT Hannah J Leeds West Leeds WEST/48/1 It's unfortunate that it's just too early for the ages to be recorded in the index. Had a look on the IGI for Hannah BUTTON and found this possibility... Christening: 29 DEC 1805 Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Father: JOHN BUTTON There are several Hannah BUTTON marriages at St Peter's Leeds, but none (I found) to anyone called GRANT... Spouse: JAMES HAIGH Marriage: 27 OCT 1823 Saint Peter, Leeds Spouse: JOHN WRIGHT Marriage: 12 NOV 1833 Saint Peter, Leeds Spouse: WILLIAM FOWLER (this was actually Ann not Hannah) Marriage: 16 DEC 1833 Saint Peter, Leeds The only one on Yorks BMD was in 1861... BUTTON Hannah TAYLOR Joseph St Mathias, Burley Leeds CE10/222 Christine |

I did a bit of neighbour-hunting. It looks as if [a] the street was re-numbered sometime between 1861 and 1871 and [b] the BUTTONs moved away. Where the households (or remnants thereof) are still there, the names are in the same sort of sequence, but I think it's the RIDGEWAYs that seem to be in the house that would have belonged to your family. Have to agree it does have a ditto against Hannah indicating that she was John Snr's daughter. But Jane was a bonnet maker not a bouquet maker. They lived in West Leeds subdistrict. According to Yorkshire BMD, both Johns who died in 1864 died in that subdistrict, though most of the other Buttons in Leeds died in other areas. Neither index gives ages. So do you think the two Johns who died that year were both yours? |

Jess Looks like she could have married William Wakeman, there is one on the 1871 census, Jane B, Leeds! Still no sign of John tho! Cheers! |

Had thought of that and thanks for the info you gave me too! It is the son John I am most interested in, the brewer, he seems to have disappeared! Ta! |

adding the info as first reply is the way to go! If anyone has the 1871 Census for Leeds, Yorkshire could they do me a favour please and do a lookup for me? On 1861 Census I have the following: John Button, Head, 79, cloth dresser, Rotherham. John Button, Son, 47, Brewer, Leeds. Jane Button, daughter, 40, Bouquet Maker, Leeds. Hannah Grant, 55, House Keeper, Leeds (looks like it says daughter on 1861 census!). Ancestry doesn't cover much of the 1871 for Yorkshire and I can't find any of them on there. I have possible dates of death for John Button (Head) 1864 quarter December, Leeds. West Riding and 1864 quarter March, Leeds, West Riding so he might not be on 1871! Many thanks! Linda PS have tried to put them on separate lines but for some reason the stupid pc won't let me!!! |
