I dont know if anyone can help. Im trying to trace the surname of my great grandmother. I have my great grandfeters birth certificate but it is very hard to read the maiden name. My reat grandfathers name was William Ronald Martin born 12.04.1888 in Surrey. His father was George Martin and mother was Sarah (also known as Annie). I cannot find a marriage on FamilySearch or a birth for William. If anyone can help, I will be very grateful

Hi Natalie- Freebmd is the best place to look for bmd info, there is a link on the front page (I think) to a graph of everything they have transcribed so far. You can also access the same data base for free at ancestry(.)co(.uk), but I think it's easier to search on freebmd. Family Search is OK, it has the 1881 uk census for free and some other info, baptisms etc. Half the battle with genealogy is knowing the best site to look at!! Good luck, Brenda

I think the Ancestry/FreeBMD choice depends on what you're looking for. Certainly, if you're trying to match names for a marriage, then FreeBMD is a better bet. Ancestry is quicker if you're trying to search a large block of time/area. And you also need to remember that Ancestry may not be working off the most up-to-date version of the database if FreeBMD has just been updated. Christine
