When my friend needed a death certificate for her stepmother last year, I was able to order one from the office local to the death, in 2000. I didn't need to know the full details, just the correct name and approximate dates. |

Thanks very much for that, Mandy. It makes sense doesn't it? I guess the birth one is to try and stop impersonation. No good doing that with a death (LOL) and marriages are public events anyway. Thanks Anne |

I hope that I've got this right - but it's what the GRO told me recently! You can't order a BIRTH certificate from the last 50 years without full information. However, you can order MARRIAGE and DEATH certificates from within that time. I had my money refunded when I tried to order a birth certificate from 40 years ago, but I successfully obtained a death certificate yesterday from 6 years ago. Mandy :) |

thanks for the phone number, Christine, I'll try it. It was her father in Law rather than her father. Although, come to think of it, I can remember my FIL's birth date!! Anne |

My 80 year old neighbour needs to prove, for financial/legal reasons, that her father in law is deceased (!!). I said I could find the death cert reference on the GRO index and order it for her. It has occurred to me that I have seen mention of not being able to order more recent certs without FULL details. The death was about 1970-72. Anyone got any experience of this please? If it will be a wasted search I could go for the probate record instead, but the death cert will be quicker. Anne |
