Hi, I followed Derek's advice but unfortunately have come to a dead end! One 'brother' John, I can't find at all and the other William was born 1795 Suthernby Cumberland but can't find his baptism! Would there be any other records with Richard's place of birth on it? Richard must have served an apprenticeship to become a blacksmith, possibly in Shap. Would there be any records of that? I await your brilliant ideas! Gillian

Robin, You're a genius!! Why didn't I think of that!!! John & William are family names, so it is quite likely that they could be Richard's brothers!!! I shall start digging straight away!! Thanks, Gillian

IGI's got a batch of 3, William, John and Richard, married at Shap within 3 years. Could be they were brothers who arrived in Shap as a family, and maybe one of the others was alive in 1851.

Hi Carol, Yes I'd seen that too. There's no way of linking it to my Richard except that the dates are nearly right, born 1876. I was wondering if there are other records which would have his place of birth. Gillian

Hello All, I am having a problem finding out where my GGG grandfather, Richard Johnson, was born. He died in 1836 (before the 1841/51 census) in Crosby Ravensworth, Westmorland aged 50. He married in 1814 in Shap to Elizabeth Farrer. The parish records entry says that they were both of this parish, ie Shap. No details of parents given. I can't find Richard's baptism in Shap. I know his wife Elizabeth Farrer was born Warcop from the census & have found her baptism entry. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I could look for information? Thanks, Gillian
