Can anyone tell me how I can access the Coroners Report and Inquest Notes of my great grandad. He died in London in Southwark.

Hi I don't know when your grandfather died, but i think there is a 75 year data protection order on coroners reports. Someone correct me if i am wrong. Also many reports are destroyed. It would be worth contacting the archieves for the area in which he died. You could also try and look up newspaper reports around the time he died. I found my Gt grandmthers death reported in the the paper. Hope that helps Jules

Hi, I am in same position - GGF committed suicide 1912 in Southwark. I have spoken to Southwark Archives who told me that some, only some, of the inquest papers survive and this depends on whether the coroner was the Coroner of London (part of southwark came under his jurisdiction). Luckily mine was but I have still to find the paperwork. The originals were apparently at the LMA but were moved during their recent refurbishment to the Guildhall. Someone very kindly went to there for me but I think that the papers are just stored and not available. In any case I am told only a brief description may only be available. You may want to go to the British Library to look up if the localpapers (I believe the South London Press) reported the inquest.

If you give me his name, I can see if it was reported in The Times.

Tracey, I think someone (maybe even you) tried that for me. But, his name was James Hanson of Kent Road and he was a wood carver/cooper. Many thanks PS October 1912

Local history centres/archives/larger libraries often have back runs of papers on microfilm. I found my gt grandfather's inquest report that way. nell

I don't think it was me, but you are right, it's not listed. Sorry.
