Thanks again Kate. I wish this was easier. I still haven't found the surname Archer in it all though (my ggg grandfather's middle name on his baptism and death). I just wish it was easier! The baptism I found for Margaret was on ScotlandsPeople - and I took it cos it was the roughly right time and right place - well I guessed that it's the right place. What's a Burgess? And what is the website for Scottish Documents?

Well, if it comes to that, we don't know that there wasn't another William Henderson / Henryson who had a daughter Margaret not on the IGI! I didn't realise how many of these Williams there were when I first looked at your thread. Anyway, maybe when Scotland's People put the 'OPR' images up (including burials) and Scotsfind finish doing the St. Cuthberts memorial inscriptions we will be able to find out more. I have some ancestors from there too but I was lucky enough to find them in the Roll of Edinburgh Burgesses on Scotsfind and also their wills and inventories in Scottish Documents (though that can get expensive!) It would be worth you having a look around on both sites if you haven't already, though I had a quick look and couldn't spot who you are looking for. Kate.

Thanks Kate..... grrrr, bloomin' tailors! I don't know what else to do! The William & Catharine fits because they had a son, William (on the IGI) but the other one might well have had a son, William, it's just not on the IGI. Chloe

The same entry is in the Edinburgh Marriage Register from Scotsfind, but there is also: Henderson, William, tailor; Eupham Skleatter ext. 27 Oct 1642 (I haven't managed to find out what the 'ext.' means yet.) Kate.

anyone anymore help? please! xx I found this on Ancestry (in an effort to track down William Henderson/Henrysone's parents). William (father to Margaret born 1681 was a tailor - might this be his parents?? Or am I just clutching at straws? Midlothan: Edinburgh - Register of Marriages, 1595-1700 A Register of Marriages performed by me.--R. F. Register of Marriages of the City of Edinburgh, 1595-1700 Old Kirk Parish. Thanks Kate. Nice to know that I'm sort of on the right track - will check out that site later (am off out right now - would much rather stay in and get stuck into this but career awaits!). I've looked on the IGI for William Henderson/Henrysone plus or minus 10 years of 1650 - several came up with father William.... gaaaah! All in Edinburgh too! Help!!! Chloe x

Ooh, Chloe, I've found something for you! If you go on Scotsfind and get the 'Edinburgh Marriage Register', you will find the following entry: HENDERSON, William, younger, tailor; Margaret Bell 18 Feb 1676. That 'younger' certainly means his father was also a William Henderson (the surnames are standardised in that document). So it may help you get back a bit further. If you haven't already looked at Scotsfind, have a look! (www.scotsfind.org) Kate.

Thanks Kate. Sorry about the confusion. I have tried to get further back on Margaret (tried last night) but I can't seem to find much. Found the marriage of her parents under William Henderson and Margaret Bell in 1676 (furthest I've ever got back, and want to get even further back!) in Edinburgh - can anyone explain why Henderson keeps on changing to and from Henryson(e)? Now I still have no idea how to go about finding their baptisms as these are common names. Anyone have any bright ideas? I'm new to Scotland ancestry, so I'm a little lost! Chloe x

I would say you have the right marriage for Thomas and Margaret and the right baptism for Margaret. I don't really see where George and Katherine come into it, but the 1703 baptism for Thomas is unlikely to be the right one given he married in 1713. You may have to keep hunting for his baptism. I had a look on Scotsfind, but couldn't find them on there. If you wait until they have finished doing the St. Cuthberts Monumental Inscriptions maybe there will be something on there to help. I also had a look at Scottish Documents but couldn't find them on there either. Maybe you should just concentrate on Margaret's line for now, then come back to Thomas's another time? Kate.

I think that this is the birth of my ancestor (father to Archibald Byers/Byres). Archibald was baptised 22 NOV 1723 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Parents Thomas Byers & Margaret Henderson (think this is a mistranscription for Henryson or vice versa - other children born in the same parish around the same time with mother's maiden name as Henryson). Again something else that advice would be greatly appreciated on. I have found two marriages for what looks to be the same couple - what do you guys think? GEORGE BYRES Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: KATHREN GORDON Family Marriage: 09 APR 1698 Saint Boswells, Roxburgh, Scotland GEORGE BYERS Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: CATHRIN GORDOUN Family Marriage: 26 APR 1698 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland I found a baptism for a Thomas Byers in St Boswells in 1703 - but - if the following marriage is right for Thomas & Margaret - then it throws my theory out of the window. MARGARET HENRYSON Female Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: WILLIAM HENRYSON Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: THOMAS BYERS Family Marriage: 30 OCT 1713 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland I'm probably really confusing people - I'm trying to get further back with Thomas and Margaret..... but I'm stuck! Might this be Margaret's baptism - 11 29/03/1681 HENRYSONE MARGARET WILLIAM HENRYSONE/MARGARET BELL FR1822 F CANONGATE EDINBURGH 685/03 0006 No Image ORDER Chloe
