Thanks Val. They seem to have moved down to London c1800, so no luck there but will buy some credits anyway.

I have a marriage from 1833 and all it gives is the names of the people getting married and the date they where married, if they stayed in Scotland for a while you might put in the births with her maiden name to get the kids names, you could put the person's name in and her birth may come up. if they died in Scotland after 1855 you will find the deaths which will give you the parents names and husband's name and what they died of

No problem, Val. I've located the marriage that Sarah found on the IGI for me, for Balfour Byers and Janet Clark. On the IGI it gives the date and the area - is it likely that by purchasing credits, I might find out more about this marriage? Are the parish records on ScotlandsPeople complete?? Chloe

Thanks Sheila and Ann. So if I bought credits on ScotlandsPeople - I still need to spend £10 more on getting a copy - but would it have fathers' names pre civil registration records? Or is it just like English Parish records, where pre 1837 you get the bar minimum and are lucky to get more?? It's getting all expensive again! Ann - I've given up on my grandfather's side (he was Irish) - have got as far as his parents, and his maternal grandmother (I knew these names and places anyway) BUT no one seem to have married or registered births!! hi i too have a Scottish branch and have fould their records much easier to find than some of the English. Births give you time and place mothers maiden name ,when parents got married date and place. marriages give you couples parents names and when they married and mothers maiden names.Good luck with your searching www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is a good place to start. Myself i have now have to find a way round the Irish branch. Regards Ann

they are like parish records anywhere else at the time - you can get the basic details on Scotlands People site and can send off for copies of the originals for a fee of £10

On my other thread - it appears that one branch of my tree goes back to Scotland - still waiting to see if other people think that I have the right man - and I was wondering - what are parish record entries for marriages c1791 in Scotland like? What info do they include? Chloe (off to WW, but shouldn't be too long)
